Palazzo della Ragione

Palazzo della Ragione
The current Palazzo della Ragione was initially a private building erected near the ancient Roman forum, today's Piazza delle Erbe, on one of the blocks formed by the grid of cardines and decumani of Roman Verona.
Over the centuries, various political and administrative institutions that determined the fate of the city have alternated within the Palace. In the 12th century, after the earthquake that razed Verona to the ground, the Municipality took possession of this area and built the Palacium Communis Veronae (Town Hall), one of the first public palaces in Italy: its rooms housed city council meetings, salt warehouses, silk duty office and the pawnshop, while during the Scaliger lordship (1262-1387) the Palace also became the seat of the Bank of Justice.
