PHILHARMONIC THEATER

The main Opera House of Verona, owned by the Philharmonic Academy of Verona, the oldest European academy. At the beginning of the 18th century, Verona needed a new and permanent opera house, and it was thus decided to build one worthy of the city, on the initiative of Marquis Scipione Maffei who presented the request for the theater's construction to the Venetian Senate. The Italian-style structure was chosen, with a vast stalls area and overlapping tiers of boxes. The most famous theatrical architect of the time, Francesco Galli da Bibbiena, was called for the design. Coming to the present day, the musical season of performances at the Philharmonic Theater traditionally opens with the Academy's September, a symphonic festival of the Philharmonic Academy of Verona that hosts internationally renowned orchestras, conductors, and soloists. Following the Academy's September, from October onwards, the Arena di Verona Foundation presents opera, ballet, and symphonic seasons. Throughout the year, there may also be events of a not strictly classical and operatic nature, such as pop music concerts and various other genres.
