The Scaliger Castle

The magnificent historic center of Sirmione is located on a peninsula that divides the southern part of Lake Garda.
The Scaliger Castle, which provides access to the historic center via its bridge, connects Sirmione to Verona, as this fortress was commissioned by the Veronese family of the Della Scala.
According to the intentions and plans of Cansignorio and Antonio II Della Scala, to whose period it is attributed, it was meant to serve as a defensive outpost for the entire territory of Verona and its surroundings, over which the Della Scala family ruled between 1259 and 1387.
Later, it lost its importance to the fortress of Peschiera and was used as a warehouse and barracks until the restorations carried out in 1919, which gave it its current appearance.
